SHIRLEY A. MARES
Shirely A. Mares is from the Yakama Indian Reservation in Washington state. She graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM, in 1993 with a double major in Traditional Pottery and Photography. Shirley also attended classes at the POEH center in Pojoaque,NM in 1995. At the POEH, Shirley continued her studies with Traditional Pottery and in 1997 she studied Silversmithing. She has continued her studies in jewelry and pottery from several well known Artists, who have taught at the POEH. Shirley broadened her experiance by learning other Art forms; such as Red Willow Basket Making, Moccasin Making, Mica Pottery, Traditional Pueblo Embroidery and her latest is Woodworking.
I do believe in making one of a kind pieces of work. My inspirations come from artists here in the Southwest but my interpretations come from the Northwest and that is what makes my Art very Unique. I want to make something that will be very special to the person that is wearing my jewelry or has a pottery of mine.
